Team Rollins is on the move

I’ve just learned that the website where the Team Rollins forum is hosted, Ning, will be ending its free forum service from July. They will be offering a paid service, however I am not prepared to pay $20 a month to keep it going. You may recall a little while ago that I canvassed the idea of setting up a new forum. Given the impending changes at Ning, it now seems that this would be a good idea. So I the coming months, I’ll be setting up a basic, self-hosted message board (using MyBB) on a new domain. It will be a simple forum to begin with. We’ll give it a bash and see how it goes. If it doesn’t work out, all it would have cost is the price of a domain name and some time. No dramas. If it goes well (which I think it will!) then we’ll have a sweet lil’ place for fans to hang and talk Rollins. To everyone who kindly volunteered to help moderate the new forum, I’ll be in touch in a few weeks or so to discuss this some more.

Henry Rollins Forum Update – Feedback please!

Well, we were completely underwhelmed by responses to the forum idea, but overwhelmed with offers from some fantastic readers of this blog to help moderate a forum, should it get up and running. Since starting this blog in 2007 I’ve had many requests from readers to start a forum – so I know there is interest out there, but without your feedback it’s difficult to gauge how much.

So, let me spell out a little clearer what a Henry Rollins forum might look like. I’d really appreciate hearing from you what kind of things you would like in the forum and whether you would be interested in participating in such a forum; even if your response is no.

What would the forum be like?
Obviously, there would be boards to chat about the different aspects of HR’s work – music, books, spoken word, film and tv, radio, side projects, etc., and a place for traders too. And as HR fans tend to be a rather multi-dimensional lot, I think that a space to talk about non-HR topics would also be appropriate (music, travel, books, politics, fun stuff, etc.). So I would envisage the HR forum being a community of people, some who just want to chat about HR, and others who want to chat with like-minded folk about non-HR stuff too. With the first four Ramones albums under our belts I’m sure we’d get along just fine.

Your feedback and ideas
So now it’s over to you. I’m not going into this much detail about a forum because I have my heart set on creating one – it would involve some work to set up and time is not something I have buckets of. However, considering that Hello Henry is a focal point for HR fans on the internet, I feel some community spirited obligation to make a forum happen if that’s what the fans want.

Please respond in the comments section below with your ideas for a HR forum and indicate whether you would be interested in participating in a HR forum (even if it was just occasionally). Thank you!

If you would rather comment privately, please email me via the contact page.

Writing a constructive email to Indie 103

Hey everyone, I just want to take a moment today to suggest a few pointers to those planning on writing Indie 103 to express their disappointment about the station’s decision to move HIMH to Saturday nights. I know many of you have been loyal listeners for many years and are disappointed that you can no longer check out the show live because you’re working or doing your regular weekend thang.

The main thing I want to say is – Smart ass letters are fun, but they aren’t going to help your cause, in fact, they could hurt it. It’s counterproductive to annoy and insult the people whose decisions you wish to influence.

Why do I know this? Because I used to be involved in managing a radio station years ago (not Indie!), and before that I was an advocate. In other words, I know a thing or two about radio, and about effective lobbying.

The best way to express your disappointment is by doing so in a manner that provides constructive, polite feedback that will be useful to the station.

Let them know where you tune in from, if you listen via stream or radio. How long you’ve been listening to HIMH, how regularly you tune in to the show and the station (ie, is HIMH the only show you listen to on Indie? Did you start listening to other shows on Indie after tuning into HIMH?). Tell them how the move to Saturday nights will effect your ability to listen to the show. If you’re aware of others who have stopped listening to HIMH or do so less often since the move, let them know that as well. And of course, let them know how much you enjoy HIMH and appreciate Indie’s continued support for the show.

Support Harmony In My Head!

Hey fanatics, today’s post is written by guntattoogirl. If you’re a fan of Henry’s radio show, please take a moment to read this post

Hello my fellow fanatics. I guess everyone saw Henry’s latest dispatch, but for those who didn’t here is a link:

Henry seems pretty upset over the way Indie 103 moved Harmony In My Head to Saturday nights, from its original time slot on Tuesdays. This show seems to be Henry’s passion, since music is his first love. And it sounds like he thinks this is some sort of demotion. I guess ultimately the ratings will tell the tale, but in the mean time we can do something to help Henry.

It’s not often we get to give something back to Henry. He gives a lot to us, answering emails, talking post-show, etc that 99.9% of other artists don’t take the time to do. So I would suggest we all contact Indie 103 to voice our displeasure. I think if enough of us get together to write, call, and generally make a pain of ourselves they might consider giving Henry his original time slot back. Maybe we could even come up with something to mail to the station, like Jericho fans and their “nuts” campaign to CBS, to make our presence even more well known. If anybody has any ideas as to what to send, please comment here we can decide together what would stand out to station management.

The Ladies of the Hello Henry Blog

I need to go into hibernation for a few days to meet a deadline for a project I’m working on. Now I know some readers are prone to experiencing Hello Henry withdrawals when we hibernate. Unfortunately the Hello Henry Patch is still undergoing extensive research and development, but the good news is an alternative treatment is available.

To get your Hello Henry kicks while I’m hunkered down caffeinating myself stupid and ignoring my pussy ass human need to sleep, I encourage you to join Team Rollins, our Henry Rollins fan community on Ning. Why join? You’ll get to hang out with the lovely ladies of the Hello Henry blog. There’s the tattoo totin’ guntattoogirl, team rollins tee model Nikki Maclicous, and the lady who gave us the nudge to get the forum happening in the first place, Raequel… just to name a few. What more reason do you need, man!?!

Team Rollins Is Go!

Team Rollins, our Henry Rollins fan community, is alive and dangerous! It has been set up on the social networking site Ning.com. Check it out and join up here: http://teamrollins.ning.com. The community has all sorts of wiz bang features. You can create your own profile page, post blogs, photos, videos, events, the works! We’re kinda new to Ning so we’re still getting familiar with all the goodies it provides. Please let me know if there’s something you’d like added.

I see this community as a place, not just to talk Rollins, but somewhere to meet fellow fanatics and talk about all kinds of cool stuff. So don’t feel the need to restrict the chatter to things Rollins related.

The community will be what YOU make it! In order for any community to thrive, it requires participation. So get postin’, get friendly with fellow fanatics, and have fun!

Happy trails…
